The ancient settlement mound on the northern edge of modern al-Karabila (Krabla), previously known as `Anqah, downstream from Abu Kemal, is a probable site for the ancient Mesopotamian city of Hindanu. Conquered by the Assyrians in the Iron Age, the town was renamed Kar-Apla-Adad, a name that possibly survives in the local toponym Karabila/Krabla. The town is attested in the Classical period under the names Giddan (Greek) and Eddana (Latin). In later times, much of the mound came to serve as a cemetery for the local community.
