Huaca Pucllana is a Pre-Incan temple complex which was used by both the Wari and Lima cultures from 500-800 ce. It is built up as a kind of ziggurat. A temple would be built, then, after a number of years had gone by, the entire complex would be filled in with dirt and rocks and a new temple would be built on top of it. This symbolized a fresh start, similar to our periodic presidential elections in the US. Pottery was ritually smashed at this site, so a great deal of it has been found, as well as buried offerings such as seeds, etc. Human sacrifice was practiced here and a fairly large number of burials have been found here, some decapitated. The remains of an entire llama was found in one of the burials. Huaca Pucllana is also home to several of Peru's national dogs, as well as ducks, vicunas, a llama named Pico, and guinea pigs (aka lunch).
