Immergun - German for evergreen

In 1919, Schwab built a sprawling $3,000,000 44-room mansion atop the hill where his mother's house had stood in Loretto, Pennsylvania. The sprawling Schwab estate covers nearly 1000 acres in the heart of Loreto. In the early 1900’s, the steel industry made Charles Schwab was one of the wealthiest men in the country. At an auction in 1942, Friends of St. Francis College, the only bidders, would buy the mansion and 240 of the original 940 acres for $32,500. Today, the mansion house remains part of Saint Francis, as the Mount Assisi Friary. Mount Assisi Monastery Sunken Gardens, Loretto, Pa., (814) 472-8971
