The county seat of Southampton County. It got its current name in 1888.
The majority of the town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as a historic district. In addition to its architectural and commercial significance, Courtland is also known for being one of the sites of Nat Turner's Rebellion, an armed conflict that involved enslaved laborers murdering more than 50 white owners and associates of local plantations countywide.
