The CMS College, Kottayam, established by the Church Missionary Society of London in 1817, is the oldest of the institutions for higher education in South India. The campus is situated in Kottayam Town. It has easy access from any part of the State.
The campus is one of the most naturally beautiful college campuses in Kerala. The different departments are housed in separate blocks, a unique feature of the college. The Administrative Block, Department Blocks, Library, Hostels, the Chapel, the College House, Great Hall, Seminar Hall, State Bank of Travancore Branch, Canteen, Computer Centre, and spacious play grounds for cricket, Hockey, Foot Ball, Basket Ball, etc., with neatly laid out roads and lawns, constitute the CMS College Campus of about 35 acres.
The College is now affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
The Alumni of the college include Dr. K. R. Narayanan, former President of India; Mr.K. P. S. Menon; formulator of Indian foreign policy;Sardar K. M. Panicker, former ambassador to China ; Dr.E.C.G Sudharshan, world famous physicist; Padmabhooshan Dr.Jacob Chandy, noted neurosurgeon ; Justice K. T. Thomas, former Judge of the Supreme Court of India; Padmabhooshan Sri. K. M. Mathew, chief Editor of Malayala Manorama; Mr.Oommen Chandy, former Chief Minister of Kerala, Mr.Suresh Kurup, Member of Parliament, Olympian Sally (former national football player)
Most famous Alumni: Prof. Sudarshan, who was nominated Nobel prize 9 times for tachyon theory
The college has 14 departments and 47 courses. There are six research centres in the college. PhD research work is conducted in the departments of Botany, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, English and Commerce.
The College is selectecd as a College with Potential for Excellence by the University Grants Commission in 2004.
The College was accorded the Five Star Status by the National Assessment and Accrediation Council of India in 1999.
About eight acres of the campus is still maintained as an evergreen virgin forest, which is the abode of a large variety of plants and animals. This patch of forest with its rich bio-diversity acts as the lungs of the Kottayam town.
