Elfed Thomas was not Director of Education in 1931 when the building was opened; he was not appointed until 1946. The reason the building was named after him was that, when the then Leicester Polytechnic took over the building in the 1970s, he had been the last Director of Education for the City of Leicester, retiring in 1971.
