Amherst was a village site in section 27 of Amherst Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota.
The village of Amherst was first called Strung Out Town because settlers built houses along the road in the ravine. The name was later shortened to Stringtown. A post office operated in Amherst village from 1870-1902. The surrounding Amherst Township was settled in 1853 and organized in 1858.
