This institution has its origin back in 1912, when the Superior School of Agricultural Studies was founded. Nowadays, the UFRPE has reached good results due to investments in education, research and active social work within the community. This public university is composed by around 700 faculty members, 780 technical/administrative staff and 8000 students. The UFRPE develops its activities in a number of areas, such as Agricultural, Human and Social Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Informatics.
The main campus is located in the capital of Pernambuco state, Recife, where the students can enjoy a Central and several Sector Libraries, a Sports Center with a semi-olympic swimming pool, indoors sports court, soccer field, and track-and-field tracks, four student residences and a Health Center.
The university runs a Veterinarian Hospital, that makes 600 procedures a month, including medical appointments, lab exams and surgery for small and medium size animals. In addition, an animal blood bank and a center for castration of dogs and cats offer free-of-charge services for less privileged pet owners.
Besides Recife Campus, the UFRPE has two additional College units, located in Garanhuns and Serra Talhada, and four advanced campi strategically placed in the major geographycal regions of the state.
The UFRPE was considered one of the 20 best Federal Universities in Brazil in 2007 and the 3rd in Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary.
