Oakridge Tower was built in 1967, and was the only residential tower of it's kind to be built in Basingstoke, which is surprising considering the large amount of High-rise office blocks in the town centre. The area around the tower has been demolished, replacing the dated brutalist flats with post modern houses and new public spaces. The tower was due to be demolished, but current elderly residents campaigned to save it, as it offered better security than ground level apartments. As the tower was in good condition, it was saved as a landmark building for the area.
