Dorris reservoir used to be one of the finest trout, bass, and catfish fishing sources in the area. A major part of the Modoc Wildlife Refuge, serving as habitat for fish and fowl, as well as use by man for irrigation and recreation. Due to the poor condition and quality of soils on farmlands surrounding Dorris Reservoir, farmers became overly dependant upon fertilizers that now pollute the lake to the point that it is unsuitable for fish, fowl, man, and irrigation. Due to over-use for irrigation, lack of rains, and pollution, there are no trout, very few catfish, and even fewer bass left, and there is a ring of greenish-blue crystals that form in the summer at the low-water mark.
