Hotel Tsentralnaya façade (Moscow)

Russia / Moscow / Moscow / Tverskaya ulitsa
 abandoned / shut down, 1897_construction

The original building on this site was constructed in the 19th Century and converted to a hotel in 1911, it served during the Soviet period as the Hotel Lux, and was where hundreds of foreign Communist immigrants were housed during the Stalin period before many of them were taken off to be executed or sent to the Gulag.

It was later known as the Tsentralnaya Hotel. The structure was partly demolished in 2007, with the exception of portions of the historic facade, so a modern luxury hotel, the Mandarin Oriental Moscow, could be built on the site, but the project was cancelled.

In 2019 plans were again announced for a modern luxury hotel, integrated with the historic facade, this time the Corinthia Moscow Hotel. Those plans were also cancelled, and the site remains largely vacant and cleared.
