This was always the main route into Doncaster from the North. Around the turn of the 21st century, construction commenced on St George's Bridge, to the north, which was needed because of increasing congestion on this narrow, old bridge. In 2002, St Georges was completed, and this bridge was closed and renewed, and then re-opened fully in 2006 for buses and taxis only, using Doncaster's new Frenchgate interchange.
