In the former Soviet Union people prefer to park their cars in a locked and guarded complex of small private garages, generally only big enough for one car, some tools, spare parts and a small workbench. Each garage will be owned by someone living within 5 to 10 minutes walk of the garage complex. Generally, each garage was built by the original owner, in Soviet times, so up close they make for a rickety mismatched row of small flat-roofed buildings.
