Built 1912 in French Renaissance/Mediterranean Revival style with Moorish details, this red brick structure was the home of the first of Ybor City's many immigrant social clubs/mutual aid societies. The club itself is no longer active, and its demise had left the building abandoned for many years.

Today, after extensive renovation, the Centro Español building is part of the Centro Ybor entertainment and retail complex.

The U.S. Department of the Interior on June 3, 1988 named El Centro Español de Tampa a National Historic Landmark.
