Sugarloaf Key Bat Tower (Perky's bat tower)

A guy named Perky wanted to start a resort in the Florida Keys. But he realized that the mosquitoes were numerous and ravenous. He reasoned that bats eat mosquitoes, so if he built a tower that bats could live in, they'd come an eat the mosquitoes. The bats never showed up.

  • This area is not really marked well as of 6/15/08. We had a hard time to locate it. Look for the resort and the small plane, take that road to the plane rides. The story goes that the bugs ate the bats!
  • The story I heard was that the bats showed up for two or three years because Perky brought some "secret recipe" phermones to the tower. He died without giving anyone the recipe, and the bats never came back.
  • Don't go further down Bat Tower Road, unless you know what you are doing! I once did that and had the tiny Mazda 323 I was in stuck in salt mud all day. Very difficult to wash that stuff off too!
