The building was put up as a market by the Old City of Carondelet in 1869. The structure fell into disuse, and the Carondelet AME Church bought it in July 1880. Members of the new Quinn Chapel AME Church, so named for William Paul Quinn, an early black bishop, dedicated the structure on June 26, 1882. A new entrance tower was added around 1900 and a parson's home in 1908.
