Madhupur is a Nagar Parishad city in district of Deoghar, Jharkhand.
The Madhupur Nagar Parishad has population of 55,238 as per report released by Census India 2011.
Straddling the two WW's, from 1910 to 1970, a virtual Who's Who of Calcutta visited this little town during the Summer, Durga Pooja and Christmas vacations. Mr Deb Narayan Kundu, GS/O Mr Bijoy Narayan Kundu of Itachuna, Hooghly, Bengal built 32 holiday bungalows for the use of "changers" from Calcutta. These were 1/2, 3, 4/5, 6/7, 8/9, 10, 11/12, 31, 29/30, 27/28, 25/26, 23/24, 21/22, 19/20, 32, 13/14, 15, 16, 17 and 18. "Changers" from Calcutta rarely got to use them, as most of them were taken on long leases mainly by retired people. Most eminent citizens of Bengal also built their own places - Gangaprasad House built by Sir Ashutosh Mookerjee (Banglar Bagh!) was a veritable palace.

Capt Debendra Chandra Mazumdar from Netrokona, Mymensingh, Bangladesh, was a famous physician who lived here from 1945 till his death in the late sixties. The much-admired Mr Uma Prasad Mookerjee, third son of Sir Ashutosh, used to spend a quarter of his time here and did much of his writing (I know, I proof-read many of his galleys).

Another eminent personality had been Mr Nitya Gopal Roy (of Hooghly), Retd DM from Bengal. He had been a sub-tenant of Capt D C Mazumdar at No. 15 Kundu Bungalow.

Mr Ashwini Kumar Chattoraj was the Govt-appointed Municipal Administrator during the mid-sixties. Dr Pande (Father of Shanti) was the BDO vet around that time. After their transfers the town gradually slipped into poor decay. This is particularly sad for a town whose Municipality, covering Lal Garh, Khalasi Mahalla, Bahanno Bigha, Pathar Chapti, Meena Bazar, Shekhpura, Barbad, Kushma and Kundu Bungalow, was inaugurated by a young lawyer from South Africa, Mr Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1910!

Some respectability has been now brought back by the La Opala factory and the well-known school Madhusthali Vidyapeeth. Also, with the upcoming extension upto Koderma of the 150-year old Madhupur-Giridih railway branch line some growth can be expected.

  • This is a small but lovely town of Jharkhand , Earlier in Bihar , worth admire because of its culture and harmoney amongst the inhabitant . Untill late 70s it has been a wonderful health resort and so it attracted lot many prominent personalities and businessmen to reside here during their vacation . I would say this town always sleeps and relax .Seldom You would find people using the most common words like Busy , Tension , dipressed etc etc . There are some really good school in town or arround . Carmel , Anandalaya and Vanasthali are some of good school where you would like to put your ward . Well connected by Kolkata , Patna and Delhi via Rail .
  • It is 35 km away from Deoghar via Jasidih and 282 km from Calcutta. Trains bound for Jasidih run via Madhupur. Buses also ply between Deoghar (old Mina Bazar Stand) and Madhupur. Madhupur is a greater favourite as a health resort than Deoghar. Deoghar also has a healthy climate but is more known as a centre of pilgrimage. Though Madhupur now-a-days lacks the jungles of sal and mahua it had in the past, yet its sweet water and cooling breeze still attracts travel minded people from March to October every year. But it is taking the shape of an industrial and congested town.
  • Madhupur is a place which I shall never be able to forget. My cousin brother was railway official sine 1960 and I am visiting the place since then and always find a new charm. Previously I used to stay in Railway quarter but after my brother's retirement he settled down at Madhupur and now we stay in a guest house run by his son in law and the charm of the guest house is unique. The guest house is known as "LEELA KAMAL" situated at 52 bigha surrounded by trees and beautifull flowers which attracts me and urges me to visit every now and then.
  • I spent my childhood here,we used to go by cycle to the wonderful calm & solitary place called 52 bigha every afternoon,chat with the friends and we have nothing to do much as it was a very small town, I used to think when I will finish my schooling i will go to bigger world, now i have travelled half of the country,seen the world as much as possible but still i feel Madhupur is my home real home,I miss my friends Sadhan,Arif,kanjilal & all,miss chowk bazar,miss Bardwan Mistanno Bhander,miss my school Vidyaashram & of course i remember my childhood love during Durgapuja.I also indeed feel great pleasure that I have got My Guruji Swami SriDharnath Swarasati at Devalaya.Madhupur is the place which always remain in the mind of the persons who lived here.
  • Hi folks...i lve my home-twn madhupur(Shekhpura)..Ther r few things which make dis place simply awesome..like sweets,cool atmphre etc..sweets-they r very tasty & availbl at lesser price all over d twn..The atmospher here becomes very enjoyable n religious during Durga puja or Chat...I don remembr whn i did witness it lst time..bt durin my school days v used to go,wit our frnds, to E.G high school during Durga puja..This place has produced many scholars in various fields be it education or politics or others, equally...But i hardly observe any changes in d normal life aspect of dis town..same sweating rickshaw puller..same crowded Gandhi chowk...same collg...whr studnts r busy with local politics,dat of no use..hopefully d railway-station has improved a bit..i wish good luck 2 d city which has potential to transform it completely to a modern small town...
  • A small beautiful place with great climate(specially in winter). Known for its festivals(holi,durrgapuja,dipawali,chatpuja,id,muharam...) The festivals are celebrated with high sprit. People living standard is very simple. It is easily reachable by train(about 300KM from Howrah). Madhupur also know for its good schools.Well maintained hostels for boys and girls , beautiful grounds for sporting event all together creates a great environment for educational growth.Carmel school,madhusthali,sarsati sisu mandir and many more take the education quality to the next level.

Known for its colorful festivals (EID, Durrgapuja,Dipawali,Muharam X-max...) These festivals are celebrated with high sprit in hear peoples. They sear each and every happy moment to each other. Madhupur People living standard is very simple. It’s very friendly. Madhupur is easily reachable by train (about 300KM from Howrah). :) .It is 35 km away from Deoghar via Jasidih and 282 km from Calcutta.
  • I Md.Shoaib Khan , Son of Md.Taiyab Khan whose Birth place is Madhupur.I have spent my golden moments of my childhood at Madhupur.My got my education from E.G.High School Then Madhupur College, thereafter Satsang College ,Deoghar from where i completed my Graduation. Now, We have made our house at Panahkola . People of panahakola are very simple , Honest & Labourious. As far as climate of Madhupur is concerened very very good.
  • Now living in england , we lived in Calcutta (as it used to be called) in the 1950's and we visited Madhupur for 4 weeks every year from mid December to mid January during the school holidays. We would come up on the train from calcutta, and rent a villa. We usually stayed in a house called Elias Lodge or Field View which was reached from the railway station by crossing a large open area which we called the Dak bunglow, then up a narrow lane with houses and bunglows on either side,then accross another patch of open ground before reaching the two house which stood alone side by side. Some of my happiest times were spent there and I have such good memories of our holidays. Can anyone who has visited madhupur recently tell me if Elias Lodge, Field View still exist, if Madhupur still maintains the charming rural atmosphire that I remember?
  • Rai Bahadur Motilal Mitra, was influential in the genesis of this town. As far as I am aware, he built the first school and housed the students. It's nice to hear so many people have fond memories of Madhupur, even though the town may have lost its former glory.
  • I lived in Madhupur in 1970. I remember Colonel Wells and Miss Barker who lived there then and were involved in social work. Also Hans. Madhupur Jn was a major station on the Main Line and most trains stopped there.

  • Dr. Amal Chandra Mitra son of Rai Bahadur Motilal Mitra lived there till early 1970. Dr. Amal Chandra Mitra was also a very renowned doctor in Madhupur and Mihijam . Perhaps Rai Bahadur Motilal Mitra lived in Madhupur since 1890 and Dr Mitra started his carrier as doctor since late thirties..
  • Met Shri Umaprasad Mookerjee at Badrinathe Temple. Stayed at Ganga Prasad house when visiting him. Every day many visitors came to have a glimpse and had surprise meeting with Shri Umarasadji. There was water in the well throughout the year. Plants had grown and gave pleasant environment. Had the opportunity to be there when Justice & Mrs. Rama Prasad Mookerjee were there. Great memories.
