Although Giridih city has population of 114,533; its urban / metropolitan population is 143,630 of which 74,901 are males and 68,729 are females.
Giridih is headquarters of the Giridih district of Jharkhand state. The literal meaning of Giridih is the land of hills & hillocks - giri, a Hindi word, means hills and dih, another word of the local dialect, indicates upland. Giridih district was earlier a part of Hazaribagh district.Giridih has several interesting spots, including the following:
Usri Falls (13 km) - it is one of the oldest and most famous picnic spots in Giridih. It is surrounded by dense forest touches Parasnath Hills. It lies in Tundi road.
Khandoli (10km) - a famous picnic spot. It is one of the places of tourist attraction of Giridih town .
Barganda: It is one of the most Posh locality of Giridih Town. Barganda is situated besides the Usri River. A new Bridge had been built recently on this side of the Usri River connecting this town to the Northern parts of the district. Interestingly, City people come to this new bridge for daily morning walks, people do come here in the evening for a cool and relaxing atmosphere which is abundant here with lush green trees in and around Barganda. Now, it can be said that Barganda in itself is like a mini township of Giridih town. *Baidadih, with a well with water reputed to contain several minerals.
Parasnath Hills and Sammed Shikharji - with the highest mountain peak in Jharkhand, 4480 feet above the sea level, it is one of the most important and sanctified holy places of the Jains. 20 out of 24 Tirthankaras (including Parshvanath) are believed to have attained salvation there.
Kharagdiha, a place near Mirjaganj, in close proximity to Giridih, is the abode to the famous saint named Langtababa. He is revered both by the Hindus and the Muslims alike. His samadhi is also located at Kharagdiha.

Dukiya Mahadev Temple in Udnabad, some 5 k.m from Giridih, possesses great religious importance.

Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose spent his last days in Giridih and the Sir J.C. Bose Girl's High School is named in his honour. He died in Giridih.
The great literary figure and the Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore also spent some time in Giridih. He wrote his Shivaji Utsav in 1904 while residing in Giridih. The house in which he resided, Dawasika Bhawan, still exists in Giridih.
Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, an Indian scientist, mathematician, and applied statistician, was born in Giridih. He was founder of ISI (Indian Statistical Institute) in 1931. R. K. Mahila College is being run in the house of the red-letter personality of India.
The veteran film maker Satyajit Ray who is the only Oscar recipient from India, spend his childhood in Giridih. He loved his ancestors' scenic beauty place and he sketched his great fictional character (appearing in a series of science fiction books), scientist Professor Shonku as residing in Giridih beside the Usri river.
