Fromer site of the Southbend subdivision of Friendswood.
1957 to 1982 - Brio Refinery Inc. 58-acre hazardous waste site is used by about 100
companies as a chemical-processing plant, a refinery and a dump. 245,000 cubic yards of
chemical waste, including vinyl chloride from Monsanto, is dumped into unlined pits.
1982 - Southbend subdivision is built on property adjacent to Brio
1985 - Brio Refinery Inc. site is placed on EPA Superfund list
1989 - Southbend residents conduct their own health survey and report high rates of
miscarriages and birth defects.
1992 - Six chemical companies and the developer of the subdivision agree to buy the
Southbend homes and pay for the college education of the 700 children who live in there.
All the homes have since been demolished.
2018 to 2019-the contaminated soil was removed to create a large storm-water detention basin

  • Some of the information in this article is wrong. The chemical componies did agree to pay for the college education, but they did not buy the homes of most of the residents, most of the residents had to walk away and just take the loss.
  • Land also contained Weber Elementary School, 1981-1992
