It used to be a huge dump, but was remediated and converted into a wildlife sanctuaray. Lakes were created by building levees made from old street rubble. It borders the waste treatment plant.

It's an example of Arcata putting its money where its mouth is; throwing green at the green.

  • A world-famous example of green technology, all of the city's waste water is pre-treated and filtered through this marsh.
  • Over a hundred years ago, when Arcata was still known as Union, there was a mile-long pier that reached out into the bay from this point. Tools and men came in and lumber went out when this was one of the biggest boom-towns in California.
  • I like birds.
  • It still becomes a huge dump when discarded humans dump themselves and their stolen shopping carts full of belongings here, thinking that it's a place to live. Talk about your street rubble!
