Originally opened in 1998 by Safeway and operated by C&S Wholesale Grocers as the Collington Distribution Center from 2000 to 2015, this is the main grocery distribution center for Safeway's Eastern Division, which technically covers from Florida up to Washington DC, though stores are primarily in the latter (and none in-between). It narrowly avoided closure when C&S, reeling from the collapse of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., decided to shutter the facility and consolidate it with centers in Pennsylvania, but Safeway (by this time owned by Albertsons) took the center back in-house and renegotiated union contracts.
