Built in 1968, Frenchgate shopping centre was known as the Arndale until 1986 when it was refurbished. In 2006, the new extension was built and Doncaster's new Frenchgate Interchange was opened to the public.
The extension was built on the site of the Young Men's Christian hall, Gresley House, and Doncaster North bus station, which were all demolished in order to build the extension.
Part of the extension spans Trafford way, which now runs under the centre through two 250m tunnels.
