St. Pantaleon (Ункель)

The Catholic parish church St. Pantaleon of Unkel, started as Romanesque building in the 13th century and was converted into a Gothic basilica in the 14th century. Two aisle were added in 1502.

At the outside church wall there is a remarkable plate. It says:

DEM GEDÄCHTNIS, des Oberleutnants im Jäger Rgt z Pf 13 LUDWIG von WERNER * 20. Aug. 1885 i. Braunschweig + 6. Dez. 1916 in Tuerin Mongolei beigesetzt in Troizkosawsk i. Sibirien

Translated:
In memory of First Lieutenant of the Rifleman Regiment 13 on Horses LUDWIG von WERNER, * 20th of Aug. 1885 in Braunschweig + 6th Dez. 1916 in Tuerin Mongolia, buried in Troizkosawsk in Sibiria

The life and death of Ludwig von Werner is being followed up.

The church is surrounded by a remarkable cemetery with tombstones of five centuries.
