The Maria Laach abbey church was founded in 1093 and dedicated in 1156. Architecturally, it is a smaller cousin of the three great Imperial cathedrals along the Rhine in Speyer, Mainz and Worms.

A distinctive feature is the small courtyard or "Paradise" in front of the west portals.
