This town is situated by the gateway to the moor which you can see to the north of the town. The name Ivybridge derives from the original bridge that goes over the erme near to the school. The river Erme runs through the town off of the moor and when it rains the river can gain a lot of height with very strong currents. When the Erme is low, it is a typical Devon river with small brooks and waterfalls.

At one point Ivybridge was the fastest growing town in Europe but was prevented from expanding too far by the A38 in the South and the Moor in the North. This explains the characteristic long shape. The Erme was a main reason for the expansion of Ivybridge as it attracted the current paper mill which is still in use today. Of course this then attracted people to live in Ivybridge for the jobs. As the Town grew, so did the school, which is now a very well achieving and well respected Community College.
