MGAC - more commonly known as the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. Catherine II founded an orphanage in Moscow in 1763. Beginning in 1773, dance classes were taught at this home for foundlings. Then in 1776 Prince Pyotr Urusov and Michael Maddox, an English entrepreneur, established the Moscow Bolshoi Ballet. Eventually the dance school became the training site for the Bolshoi Ballet Company and moved to this site in 1968. Today most of the principal dances of the Bolshoi are graduates of the Academy.
