In the middle of the Town Salina of Cockburn Town there is an island known simply as "The Island". Here are the ruins of a hospital station built in the early-mid 1800’s. Ships passengers or residents suspected of having a contagious disease (cholera, typhoid fever…) were quarantined here. The many graves, marked and unmarked, that surround the clinic ruins on the crest of a small hill tell us that many did not recover.

Now a popular spot for birdwatching. Please treat the area with reverence as it is a burial ground.
