Add category
Ghost town. Established in 1734 by Austrian Protestants who had been expelled from Salzburg by royal edict. It served as a haven for religious refugees before the Revolution. Much of the town was destroyed by the British in 1788. It was briefly the state capital of Georgia in 1782. Served as the county seat of Effingham County from 1797 to 1799. Never fully rebuilt after the Revolution, it was finally abandoned in 1855. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Now part of Rincon, Georgia.
