A 7 de Junho de 1494, foi assinado entre Portugal e Espanha o Tratado de Tordesilhas, que fixava uma linha divisória a 370 léguas a oeste de Cabo Verde, passando ao norte no Pará e ao sul em Laguna.
Antes mesmo de ser colonizada Laguna já entrava para a história como limite territorial entre Portugal e Espanha. O monumento foi erguido para lembrar a assinatura do Tratado de Tordesilhas, em 1494, que estabelecia uma linha imaginária 370 léguas a oeste do Arquipélago de Cabo Verde, sendo que as terras a leste desse meridiano pertenceriam a Portugal. O trecho de terra limitado pelo tratado se estendia de Belém do Pará, ao norte, até Laguna, ao sul.

  • On the 7th of June 1494, the Treaty of Tordesilhas (Tordesillas) was signed between Portugal and Spain, which fixed a dividing line 370 leagues to the west of Cape Verde, passing to the north in Pará and to the south in Laguna. Even before being colonized, Laguna had already entered history as the territorial limit between Portugal and Spain. The monument was erected to remember the signing of the Treaty of Tordesilhas in 1494, which established an imaginary line 370 leagues to the west of the Archipelago of Cape Verde, with the lands to the east of this meridian belonging to Portugal.
