City with a population of 116,760 at the 2000 census. Once settled by Patwin Native Americans. After the Spanish colonized the area, the territory was granted to General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo in 1843. After the area was ceded to the United States, Vallejo cooperated with the American government and was a proponent of statehood. He proposed the development of a city named Eureka in the North Bay area - his plan was adopted but the city was named after him. The state legislature made the city the capital in 1851, but inadequate facilities forced the legislature to move the capital in 1853. The naval shipyard was built here and sustained the city after the capital was moved. In 2008 the city became the largest to declare bankruptcy in California history.
