The track originally opened in 1927 as the Baker Ranch Stadium, built by Roy Baker. It was a completely enclosed rodeo stadium which could seat up to 18,000 people. During the Depression, Baker sold the stadium to film cowboy star, Hoot Gibson. Gibson continued to hold rodeos at the stadium while attracting legendary Hollywood stars such as Tom Mix, John Wayne, Clark Gable, William S. Hart, and Harry Carey. The stadium would change hands several more times before William Bonelli purchased the stadium from the bank. Although Bonelli continued the tradition of holding rodeos here, he introduced auto racing in 1939. A 1/3 mile paved flat track, it closed unexpectedly during the 1995 season. It now hosts a weekly swap meet, auto shows, and concerts. It has also been featured in many television shows and movie scenes.
