Initially this area was owned by the Forsyths, a significant local land-owning family. In 1927 this land was leased from the Forsyths and the Boardwalk Amusement Park was constructed here for $60000. However, the park proved short-lived, and in 1930 the land was sold to the company which would later become Unilever. Today the plant primarily specializes in the production of synthetic bar soaps under the Dove and Caress brands. The facility supplies the North American market with an estimated 950 million bars of soap annually. In 2012 Unilever began an $800000 redevelopment project, cooperating with the City of Hammond to attract retail to the area.
