Chameli House of the first Women’s residential hostel started functioning with twelve girl students in the year 1938 after the establishment of University of Dhaka in the year 1921. This women Hostel was recognized as Women Hall from the month of September 1956. In the year 1964 this Women Hall was named as "Rokeya Hall" after the name of Begum Rokeya who dedicated her whole life to emancipate the women of this society. Mrs. Akther Imam, Professor of Philosophy, University of Dhaka was first Provost of this Hall.

Rokeya Hall is existing in its own glory along with four spacious buildings. Recently the four buildings were named as:

(i) Main Building, (ii) Extension Building, (iii) Honours Building & (iv) New Building. The names of these buildings are changed to (i) Shapla, (ii) Aporajita, (iii) Mallika and (iv) Chameli House, respectively.
