The present building, built on the site of an earlier Romanesque church, dates back to the centuries XIII and XIV.
The facade has reliefs around all'oculo with the symbols of the Evangelists and the Agnus Dei. The interior has a single nave, transept and without transverse arches that support the eaves, is the result of restoration work at the beginning of the century XX. The church is rich in paintings due to artists eugubinians '500 (i Nucci, the Basili), but also foreign artists (Sinibaldi Ibi, Julian Presutti, Dono Doni). Very significant is the Baroque chapel that opens in the middle of the wall d.: Allegrini contains frescoes and a painting (the Birth of the Virgin) of Gherardi.
To the left of the high altar is the Seat of the Magistrates, with faux marquetry by Benedetto Nucci. In the choir is the Episcopal Seat, carved around the middle of the century XVI. The coffin of late antiquity under the main altar contains the relics of Saints James and Mariano, owners of the church. On the walls of the temple are traces of frescoes century XIV and XV. The wall paintings of the apse and the triumphal arch of the chapels on the left, are the work of Augusto Stoppoloni (1916-18).
