The abbey is located in Badia , part of the municipality of Umbertide (PG) .
The Abbey of San Salvatore Montecorona , is located four kilometers from Umbertide , at the foot of the hill of the same name . According to tradition it was founded in San Romualdo , in 1008 , the monastery of San Salvatore di Monte Acuto, one of the largest Benedictine abbeys in Umbria. In 1050 the monastery was supported by St. Peter Damian. The monks devoted themselves to the work of individuals and communities , focusing on agriculture and handicraft . In the centuries that have passed through its walls the figures of great importance, such as the Blessed Paul Giustiniani and many others who have instilled traits of their deep spirituality. The ancient basement crypt is of great artistic and cultural value . E 'consists of a large room divided into five naves with columns of various styles that support the low times . The upper church has three naves , was consecrated in 1105 ; the remains of frescoes and a wooden well made . Interesting circular and octagonal bell tower , perhaps formerly tower defense , with the clock recently restored. On the occasion of the celebration of the millennium of the abbey, in 2008 , opened a museum of religious artifacts and archaeological material found during the excavations for the renovation of the church . Abbey climb to 705 meters of the Hermitage , along a road surrounded by forests of beech and chestnut trees and dotted with shrines . It was formerly attached to the Abbey by a trail called " the bricks " , two meters wide and built with dry sandstone blocks , re-opened at a walk-label which has allowed us to rediscover the charms of a nature still intact.
