Steel Winds Wind Farm

Built atop the slag heaps of the defunct Bethlehem Lackawanna Steel Mill, the eight automated 2.5-MW Liberty Series Wind Turbines of the Steel Winds sit 360ft above ground and use Lake Erie's near-constant prevailing breeze to produce electricity.

Constructed by Clipper Windpower in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the eight units produce 20MW of electricity (enough to power 6,000 average American homes) which is sold into the NYS ISO grid for sale to retail customers. The original eight units came online in April 2007 and were found to be so effective that a further two were added to the site in 2011 and four more erected in nearby Hamburg, NY. The wind farm thus consists of a total of 14 Clipper Liberty C89 2.5MW turbines with a nameplate generating capacity of 35 MW.
