The Andaman and Nicobar Islands is an Union Territory of India. The capital is Port Blair, on the South Andaman Island.
The territory comprises two geographically separated
archipelagos, the Andaman Islands at north and and the Nicobar islands at south. Both still support aboriginal
populations. Some tribes in the Andaman islands have been essentially isolated from other humans for millennia;
possibly since 60,000 years, when the lower sea level created a land bridge connecting the islands to Burma and Sumatra.
Between 1858 and Indian Independence, the islands were used by the British as a penal colony for Indian freedom fighters.
They were held at the Cellular Jail at Port Blair, which is now a world heritage monument.
