Assam (Assamese: অসম , AXOM ) is a northeastern state of India with its capital at Dispur, which is part of the city Guwahati. Located south of the eastern Himalayas, Assam comprises the Brahmaputra and the Barak river valleys and the Karbi Anglong and the North Cachar Hills with an area of 30,285 square miles (78,438 km²).Assam was known by different names in different periods. In the 'Ramayana' and the 'Mahabharata', Assam was mentioned as 'Pragjyotishpur' which means land of eastern light. But with the passage of time the name 'Kamrup' became more popular. The name Assam came from a victorious tribe of Tai.This tribe had no 'same'(equal)in strength and courage. They also could not be equaled. So the local inhabitants began to call them 'Asama' or 'Asoma'and the land they occupied was called Asom. After British came to the state, they called the state as 'Assam'.
The climate of Assam is mainly moderate . Assam is famous for its tea.Out of the total tea production of the country Assam produces about 50%.
