One of the world's great libraries, with over 13 million items. A legal deposit library, it receives a copy of everything printed in the UK and contains many overseas collections as well. Contains the manuscripts of Walter Scott, Muriel Spark and many other Scots authors. Recently acquired the John Murray Archive containing papers of Byron, Livingstone, Jane Austen and 16,000 others.
