Groundbreaking for the Grand Wayne Convention Center and adjoining Hilton Hotel took place April 18, 1983, opening to the public as a 90,000+ square-foot (8,400 m²) exhibition facility in 1985.
Beginning in 2003, the entire center was renovated and expanded to the west, bringing the total exhibition space to 225,000 square-feet (20,900 m²) at a cost of over $40 million.
