Designed c. 1963 by Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill as a rare book library named for Edwin, Walter and Frederick Beinecke who were heirs of the Sperry & Hutchinson Company. The building houses an extraordinary collection of rare texts, including an original Gutenberg Bible.

In 2016, the interior was renovated and its original Knoll furniture pieces restored.
