In 1912 the Chudov monastery, which had possession of this territory for centuries, decided to build a dokhodny dom" or money-making house and a shelter for orphans on this site. Ivan Pavlovich Mashkov (1867-1945) designed the building in 1915 and the foundation was laid, but the construction stopped, first for World War I and then for the 1917 Revolution. When the building was finally completed in 1923, its 49 apartments were handed over to the collective staff of the First Model Printing House, formerly the Sytin Printing House.
