These buildings were begun in 1941 and were completed in 1951. The architect was Lev Rudnev who also designed the main building at Moscow State Univeristy. The center of the ensemble, an example of Soviet monumentalism, is higher than the surrounding wings and topped with a sculpture that appears from a distance to be a "crown." Bas-reliefs with military themes decorate the attic level and were the design of the architect and Vladimir Oskarovich Munts (1903-1974), who had previously collaborated on the construction of the M. V. Frunze Military Academy in 1932-1937. The massive size of the complex suggests that its creators wanted to underline the authority and invincibility of the Soviet Army.
