Designed by Wm Russell of Renwick, Aspinwall and Owen in 1893 as part of the 173 acre "Eastover Farm" estate of Colgate Hoyt. Originally Elizabethan in style, the building was remodeled in the colonial revival taste.
Purchased in the early 1930's by Edward C. W. Oelsner who added several small pre-fabricated cottages to the compound.
Subsequently owned by George N. Armsby, the boathouse was then sold to the noted fashion designer and clothing manufacturer, Alexander Shields.
Alexander Shields known for the luxury, style and quality of the men's clothing he made from the 1950's through the 1970's. He won the American Fashion Critics' Awards 'Special' award, which honors noteworthy contributions to fashion, for 'excitement in menswear' in 1972. A family member explained Alexander's artistic vision thus: "He believed in the calculus of clothing....".
This boathouse stood for 115 years and was demolished to make way for a modern house built to incorporate portions of the older foundations in 2008.
