Minicoy (known locally as Maliku) is the southernmost of the Lakshadweep archipelago, lying 175 km southwest of Suheli Par in the Cannanore Islands, from which they are separated from by the Nine Degree Channel. To the south lie the atolls of the Maldives, with their northernmost member of Ihavandiffulu being located 128 km to the south across the Eight Degree Channel (Vangaaru Channel).

The island of Minicoy forms the eastern and southern side to the atoll. Covering an area of 4.4 km², it is the second largest island of the Lakshadweep archipelago after Andrott, measuring 10.6 km in length and 0.82 km across at its widest point. The island is boomerang-shaped, with the northern end tapering towards Kodi Point as a thin ribbon of land only tens of meters across. In the southwest, northwest of Tunda Point, lies the small island of Wiringili (bottom-right in the image).

The lagoon of Minicoy is shallow (averaging 4 m in depth) covering an area of 25 km². It is connected to the open sea by the Saleh Magu Channel in the northeast.

Actually those who are living this Islands are all Muslims and they speak in Dhivehi and their culture is sama Maldivian Culture as well, In the history this is one of the Maldivian Island but some reason its now Indian, The Relatives and Familly Members Living in the Maldives are requesting to get easyway to visit this Island to sea their Relatives. sofar no any respond from the Government of India. too sad. too stuipid thing rite?   • i visited Minicoy at 2005 for installing the video confrencing system in NIC. One of the beautifull island. Minicoy was my first ever visited place in lakshadweep

  • The Tight-fisted King An oral tradition of the Maldives (according to the late Magieduruge Ibrahim Didi, a Maldivian learned man) explains why Minicoy is not politically part of the Maldives anymore: Some time in the past (perhaps during the 17th century), Minicoy was devastated by a great cyclone which destroyed most houses and a great number of coconut trees. Following the catastrophe, a delegation of Minicoy islanders from the best families in the island sailed to the King in Male' asking for gold to help them through the hard times. However, the Maldive King told them that he had not enough money in his treasury and that he was not able to help them. Hence the delegation of Maliku nobles went onwards to the Malabar coast, where they found favor with the king of Cannanore (Kannur) who welcomed them and helped the Minicoy people to rebuild their island in exchange for their loyalty. Henceforth the Minicoy Islanders owed allegiance to this kingdom of the SW Indian shore. So there you have it.. :)

  • What's your problem "real man"? Adheen is right! Indian government must make an easy way for the Minicoyans and Maldivians relatives to meet! And the good news is that now Maldivians can visit Minicoy as tourists and Minicoyans can visit Maldives much easily, as any other Indian! Nobody is claiming over New Delhi or any other Indian Land! Minicoy is geographically, historically, culturally, ethnically and linguistically a part of the Maldives! No one can deny this! But we also believe that it's politically part of Indian Union Territory of Lakshadweep. The Maldivians are not laying any claims over Minicoy, they only want to visit their relatives in Minicoy as to the Minicoyans want to meet their relatives in Maldives. A land can be holy if only its inhabitants are holy! but you sound very unholy "real man"!

He is a Maldivian longing to visit his relatives in Minicoy. Is there anything wrong in expressing his desire. Before you react to anything, understand it. Otherwise you will land up in trouble. Minicoy is an integral part of our great nation 'INDIA'. People of Minicoy are the most patriotic citizens. You may go and see how they celebrate national days like Independence Day (15 Aug) , Republic Day (26 Jan) etc. Don't make comments on people without knowing them properly.
