Situated on the banks of the River Brahmaputra, Dibrugarh is the headquarters of Dibrugarh district of Assam. Dibrugarh is known as the 'Tea City of India' and is the largest tea exporting city in India. Dibrugarh derives its name from Dibaru-mukh, that is the confluence of river Dibaru/Dibru, a tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra and Brahmaputra itself. Dibarumukh has the historical importance of being used for camping by the Ahoms during the Ahom-Chutia war.

Dibrugarh is also called the TEA CITY of India because of the sprawling tea gardens in and around the city and undivided Dibrugarh district accounts for the major chunk of the total tea produced in Assam, which is famous in the entire globe with the brand name Assam Tea. Dibrugarh district also has a good number of oil wells, producing crude oil and houses the registered office of the India's No.2 state owned crude oil exploration and production company, namely, Oil India Ltd. at Duliajan. Dibrugarh is also a medical township, with the famous Assam Medical College and Hospital being esablished way back in 1947, and also several other nursing homes and hospitals in the private sector offering good health care facilities. Dibrugarh is well connected to the rest of the country by regular rail, road and air transport services. Indian Airlines, Jetlite and Kingfisher offer direct flight from Dibrugarh to Kolkata, whereas, Jetlite and Indigo airlines offer regular flight to the national capital Delhi with one hop at Guwahati.
