One of the oldest Roman Catholic parishes in Michigan.
It began as the French garrison church at Fort Michilimackinac in what is now Mackinaw City.
When the British moved their garrison to Mackinac Island during the American Revolution, the wooden St. Anne's was dismantled, dragged across the winter ice and rebuilt at the current location.
The current church with landmark white spire was built later.
The island's first cemetery used to be adjacent to the church, but it soon became overcrowded. The graves were moved to a much larger parish cemetery in the center of the island, and the former cemetery is now a small garden.
