The junction of two railroads: the Chicago and Northwestern (running southwest to northeast) and the former Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific (running southeast to northwest). Many years ago, a tower at this location directed traffic.

When the 1997 national convention of the National Model Railroad Association met in Madison in July 1997, it named the meeting "Lake Junction '97."
