"Norwood" (Plandome Manor, New York)

USA / New York / Plandome Manor / Plandome Manor, New York
residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, historic remains, Colonial Revival (architecture)

Residence built c1906 by Theodore Sizer, industrialist and owner of a lumber enterprise, who lived here with his large family, and employed a full-time farmer to work the land, until his death in 1924. One of his sons, Robert Ryland Sizer Sr. who continued to run the family business, and was one of the first members of the North Hempstead Country Club, sold the property in 1928 to marine attorney Herman Goldman, who expanded the residence in the Neo-Dutch Colonial style to 22 rooms, The original 10 acres were expanded to 36, and the chicken coop was converted into a bowling alley (torn down in 1975). Goldman served as a partner in his eponymous firm, was chairman of the board of Mollins Machine Co, and served as a director of United States Lines. In 1936 he hired Mr. and Mrs. Peter Rickert as estate caretakers who worked for and lived on the estate in the cottage into the 1980s. His brother, Albert Goldman, was a longtime Postmaster General of New York.

Upon his death in 1967, the property was put up for auction and sold to a developer, but they could not subdivide into enough homes to make it feasible. The village persuaded Nassau County to step in, and they bought the property in 1970. The North Shore Science Museum moved in by 1973.

Comments

  • Now called the Science Museum of Long Island.
  • My granNdparents were the caretakers of the estate. I have great memories visiting them. From bowling to sledding down the big hill behind the cottage, walking streams at Leed ponds preserve and walking through the woods. Great memories. Carol Rickert.
  • The property was saved by development through the tireless work of Plandome Manor Village Manor, Arthur Schiller.
