  • At time of construction, most expensive dorm is US history; over $70M, at least $20M was overrun. The construction delays meant some plan amendments; originally the building was supposed to have concrete arches on the tops of the towers, similar to the one on the Third Avenue South (now Alumni Hall) dorm a few blocks south. As costs rose and the project ran over a year late, these were omitted. This meant that the roofs had not been designed to be exposed to the elements; as a result, during the first year of full occupancy (1988-1989 school year), the elevators shorted out several times during major rainstorms. Another architectural oops was that the kitchens all had very sensitive smoke detectors, but many were designed without exhaust hoods for the stoves. This meant approximately 40 false fire alarms in the first few months of occupancy, most resulting in residents having to walk down and back up; the building is about fifteen stories.
